Clarificadors are equipment designed to remove suspended solids and reduce turbidity from liquids by promoting sedimentation or flotation. They are used across multiple industries, including municipal and industrial water treatment, wastewater management, food and beverage processing, pulp and paper, and oil and chemical production. The core function is to separate solids from liquid so that the clarified effluent meets downstream process or discharge requirements.

The principle of operation typically relies on gravity settling in a large detention zone, sometimes enhanced by coagulation and flocculation to aggregate particles. Some clarificadors use flotation, where air is introduced to lift solids to the surface for removal. Variants include lamella or inclined-plate clarifiers, which increase settling area with a stack of inclined plates, and dissolved air flotation (DAF) units, which attach microbubbles to particles to rise. Common configurations also include circular or rectangular tanks with mechanisms to collect settled sludge at the bottom and overflow weirs to maintain a stable clarified overflow.

Key components often found in clarificadors are inlet and outlet structures, sludge collection and removal systems (scrapers or pumps), baffles or weirs to control flow, and, in flotation systems, air injection lines and skim tanks. Materials and design choices depend on the chemical composition of the liquid, the expected particle size, and the required throughput.

Applications include preparing water for potable use, treating municipal and industrial effluents, clarifying process liquids in pulp and paper, oil refineries, and beverage production. Advantages include passive operation and energy efficiency, while limitations involve space requirements, sensitivity to flow variations, and maintenance needs for moving parts.
