Cityship is a concept for a large vessel or flotilla designed to operate as a self-contained urban environment on the sea. It can be a single ship with extensive onboard infrastructure or a network of interconnected platforms and vessels that together form a mobile city. The idea emphasizes housing, commerce, governance, and essential services, with the potential to relocate urban life as a response to overcrowding, climate displacement, or the search for new habitats beyond land-based cities.

Design considerations include habitat modularity, redundancy, and resilience. A cityship would require energy self-sufficiency, using a mix of solar, wind, tidal, and possibly nuclear power; water desalination and treatment; wastewater recycling; food production such as hydroponics; and robust waste management. Transportation networks would connect residents to amenities, while climate control, safety systems, and medical facilities would be prioritized.

Mobility raises legal and logistical questions. Cityships may be designed to travel between ports or remain anchored offshore; governance, taxation, immigration, and regulatory compliance would require clear frameworks, possibly via international agreements or special jurisdictions. Economic models range from publicly funded municipalities to private enterprises offering services to residents or visitors.

Challenges include weather, hull integrity, safety, environmental impact, insurance, and high construction and maintenance costs. While largely speculative, cityships inform discussions about seasteading, floating cities, and future urban resilience by examining how a self-contained urban entity might function at sea.
