Churchplays, also known as liturgical drama, are dramatic performances that originated within Christian churches during the Middle Ages. These plays were not typically separate from religious services but were often integrated into them, usually performed during important feast days. Their primary purpose was didactic, aiming to educate the largely illiterate congregations about biblical stories and theological concepts in an engaging and memorable way.

The earliest churchplays were often simple dialogues reenacting key Gospel narratives, such as the Annunciation, the Nativity, or the Resurrection. These were typically performed by clergy members or choirboys, often using Latin, the language of the liturgy. Over time, these performances became more elaborate, incorporating more characters, dialogue, and even rudimentary staging and costumes.

As the plays grew in complexity, they began to move beyond the confines of the church sanctuary, eventually being performed in churchyards and then in secular spaces. This shift also saw the plays being written in vernacular languages, making them accessible to a wider audience. The subjects also expanded to include stories from the lives of saints and Old Testament narratives. While the churchplays served a vital religious and educational function, their development also laid groundwork for the evolution of Western theater as an independent art form. Eventually, the increasing secularization and commercialization of these plays led to their separation from direct church control and the eventual decline of their performance within religious institutions.
