Chthonology is the study of chthonic or earth-related realms, deities, and cults in religion, myth, and folklore. The term derives from the Greek chthôn, meaning earth or ground, and -logia, meaning discourse or study. It is used in various scholarly contexts to refer to investigations of subterranean or soil-associated dimensions of belief and ritual.

Scholarly scope includes analysis of how subterranean realms are imagined and ritualized, the relations between earth and death, and the cultic practices directed at chthonic beings. It spans religious studies, archaeology, anthropology, and literary criticism, examining sacred spaces such as caves, wells, tombs, and temples, as well as iconography and ritual texts. Chthonology often focuses on the distinction between chthonic and celestial or apical deities, and on the ways communities incorporate soil, burial, and the dead into myth and ritual.

Historically, chthonic themes are prominent in ancient Greek religion where gods and figures such as Hades, Hecate, and Demeter (in her earth-bound aspects) function in rites associated with death, the afterlife, and soil fertility. Similar motifs occur in other cultures with underworld traditions and earth deities, and in modern scholarship that treats necro-rituals, ancestral veneration, and the symbolic value of earth as a source of life, death, and renewal.

Chthonology is not a widely standardized discipline, but a term used across fields to describe attention to underworld and earth-centered aspects of belief. Methodologies combine textual criticism, archaeological fieldwork, and ethnographic data, with emphasis on symbolism, ritual practice, and social memory. In contemporary contexts, chthonology also appears in literary theory, fantasy literature, and some strands of occult thought to describe imagined or esoteric earth-based cosmologies.
