Chlorenchyma is a type of plant tissue that contains chloroplasts and is therefore photosynthetic. It is typically found in the leaves and stems of plants. The cells of chlorennchyma are generally parenchymal cells that have been modified to contain a high density of chloroplasts. These cells are responsible for carrying out photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy in the form of glucose.

Chlorenchyma tissue is essential for plant survival, as it provides the plant with the energy it needs to grow and reproduce. The amount of chlorennchyma in a plant can vary depending on the species and the environmental conditions. For example, plants that grow in areas with high light intensity may have more chlorennchyma than plants that grow in shaded areas.

Chlorenchyma can be found in various parts of the plant. In leaves, it forms the mesophyll, which is divided into the palisade mesophyll and the spongy mesophyll. The palisade mesophyll, located on the upper surface of the leaf, is composed of elongated cells that are tightly packed and rich in chloroplasts, maximizing light absorption. The spongy mesophyll, found below the palisade layer, consists of irregularly shaped cells with large air spaces between them, facilitating gas exchange. In stems, chlorennchyma is often located in the outer layers, beneath the epidermis, and contributes to photosynthesis, especially in young or herbaceous stems.
