Alchemy, an ancient proto-scientific tradition, combined elements of chemistry, metallurgy, astrology, art, mysticism, and religion. Practitioners, often called chimistas, sought to purify, mature, and perfect certain materials. Their goals were diverse, ranging from the creation of a universal solvent and the elixir of life, capable of granting immortality, to the transmutation of base metals like lead into noble metals such as gold.
