Chiffre de REDE is a cryptographic term used to describe a technique for obscuring the meaning of a message by encrypting it in a way that appears to be meaningless or nonsense, while the recipient of the message is intended to recognize it as a form of encrypted communication. However, the encryption itself does not prevent the message from being understood.

The name "chiffre de REDE" is derived from the addition of a Latin phrase to a word, which indicates the manner of forming the encrypted word, an implicit acknowledgement of the device cipher which obscures meaning rather than conceal the fact that a message of some sort is being transmitted.

This type of communication is typically used by persons unwilling or unable to use sophisticated encryption or who are unfamiliar with more complex methods of concealing communications. When these individuals wish to send a message that cannot be intercepted and read by unauthorized persons, they are likely to use this cipher in an attempt to confuse the interceptor, however the cipher is highly predictable and thus does not serve the purpose intended.

In classical times this cipher was referred to as "insert spurious letters" between pairs of existing letters to obscure the significance of the original document.

The encryption method was relatively simple and could be deciphered very easily, though the manipulation defied key recognition.
