Chessplaying refers to the activity of playing chess, a two-player strategy game on an 8x8 board. Each side starts with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. The aim is to checkmate the opponent’s king; games can also end by resignation, draw, stalemate, or insufficient material. White moves first, and players alternate turns, moving according to each piece’s legal moves.
