Ceratioids, commonly known as deep-sea anglerfish, are a diverse group of bony fish belonging to the order Lophiiformes. They are characterized by their bioluminescent lures, which they use to attract prey in the dark depths of the ocean. These fish are found in all oceans, typically at depths between 500 and 2,000 meters, although some species inhabit even greater depths.

A striking feature of ceratioids is extreme sexual dimorphism. Males are significantly smaller than females and often possess specialized olfactory organs to locate a mate. Upon finding a female, the male bites into her body and fuses with her, becoming a parasitic appendage that provides sperm in exchange for nutrients. This ensures reproductive success in the vast, sparsely populated deep sea.

The body shape of ceratioids is often globular, with a large mouth filled with sharp, needle-like teeth. Their coloration is typically dark, ranging from black to deep brown, providing camouflage in their abyssal environment. While their appearance can be intimidating, their slow-moving nature and reliance on ambush predation make them a fascinating example of adaptation to extreme conditions. The diversity within the ceratioid suborder is considerable, with over 200 described species exhibiting a range of sizes, lure structures, and hunting strategies.
