CenterCenteret is a multidisciplinary research institute located in Stockholm, Sweden, dedicated to the study of urban sustainability, digital innovation, and public policy. The institute was founded in 2005 through the amalgamation of the Swedish Center for Sustainable Cities and the European Digital Infrastructure Research Center. Its mission is to generate evidence-based solutions for the challenges of rapidly growing metropolitan areas, with a focus on environmental stewardship, inclusive urban design, and resilient infrastructure systems.

The center hosts a wide array of research projects, including climate‑adaptive transportation networks, smart grid technologies, and the social dynamics of citizen engagement in policymaking. It collaborates with national universities, municipal governments, and international organizations such as the European Union and OECD. Annual conferences, such as the Stockholm Urban Futures Forum, attract scholars and industry leaders from across the globe.

In addition to its research agenda, CenterCenteret operates the Open Urban Lab, an online platform that provides data sets, simulation tools, and educational resources to students and professionals. Notable achievements include the development of a predictive model for urban heat islands that has been adopted by several Scandinavian cities, and a policy recommendation framework that informed Sweden’s 2023 National Environmental Action Plan.

The institute’s leadership includes Director Dr. Ingrid Långstrom, a prominent urban geographer, and Senior Researcher Dr. Miguel Ortega, known for his work on sustainable digital infrastructures. In 2021 CenterCenteret received the Swedish Innovation Prize for its contributions to green technology.
