Cement technology, or cementteknik, is the engineering discipline concerned with the production, properties, performance, and applications of cement and cement-based materials, most notably concrete. It covers the chemistry of cement hydration, the design of concrete mixes, durability under various environmental conditions, and the development of sustainable materials and processes. The field supports construction by providing reliable binders, quality control, and standardized testing methods.

Materials and chemistry: The primary binder is cement, usually Portland cement clinker ground to a fine powder. When mixed with water, cement hydrates to form calcium silicate hydrate and other products that impart strength. Concrete comprises cement, aggregates (sand and gravel), water, and often admixtures or supplementary cementitious materials such as fly ash, slag, or natural pozzolans.

Production and construction: Cement is produced in cement kilns, ground to a fine powder, and stored as a dry binder. Concrete production follows batching, mixing, placing, compaction, and curing. Admixtures modify workability, set time, or durability. Quality control relies on tests for strength, workability, durability, and dimensional stability, and on adherence to standards such as cement type, mix design, and structural codes.

Performance and durability: Key properties include workability, early and ultimate strength, modulus of elasticity, and resistance to cracking, freeze–thaw, sulfate attack, and Alkali–silica reaction. Proper mix design, curing, and protective measures enhance long-term performance. Sustainability is increasingly emphasized through reduced clinker content, energy efficiency in kilns, and the use of recycled materials.

Standards and applications: International standards govern cement types, concrete design, and testing (for example EN 197 for cement, EN 206 for concrete, Eurocode 2 for design). Cementteknik intersects with civil and structural engineering, construction materials testing, and environmental assessment, supporting infrastructure, buildings, and industrial facilities worldwide.
