Cellists are musicians who perform on the cello, a bass- to tenor-range string instrument held between the knees and played with a bow or by plucking. The cello has four strings tuned from low to high C-G-D-A and a wide compass that enables both lyrical melodies and powerful lower tones. In performance, cellists may work as solo artists, as chamber musicians in ensembles such as string trios or quartets, or as members of orchestras, often serving as principal players in professional ensembles. Cellists develop techniques such as precise intonation, varied bowing, vibrato, shifting, and, in contemporary works, extended techniques. They read music in bass and treble clefs and sometimes the tenor clef.
