Causaal is a municipality located in the province of Zamora, within the autonomous community of Castile and León in north‑western Spain. The town lies in the comarca of Tierra del Vino, on the banks of the Esla River, at an elevation of approximately 720 metres above sea level. According to the most recent population census, Causaal has around 1 200 inhabitants, the majority of whom are engaged in agricultural and livestock activities.

The settlement’s origins date back to the early Middle Ages, with the first documented reference appearing in a 10th‑century charter that mentions a defensive fortification (castillo) in the area. The name “Causaal” is believed to derive from a pre‑Roman hydronym, possibly linked to the ancient Celtic word for “water”. Throughout the Reconquista, the town served as a frontier outpost and later became part of the Marquisate of Villafranca.

Causaal’s economy traditionally revolves around cereal cultivation, vineyards, and the breeding of Iberian cattle. In recent decades, the municipality has promoted rural tourism, highlighting its Romanesque church of San Pedro, a 12th‑century structure noted for its modest bell tower and carved portal. The town also hosts an annual feria celebrating local gastronomy, featuring dishes such as migas and lamb stew.

Administratively, Causaal is governed by a municipal council elected every four years. The town participates in regional development programs aimed at preserving cultural heritage and improving infrastructure, while maintaining its characteristic quiet, rural character.
