The 10th century, spanning roughly 901 to 1000 CE, was a period of political realignments, state formation, and cultural change across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. It saw the consolidation of some medieval polities, the rise of new dynasties, and stabilizing processes after earlier upheavals. Trade networks and urban life expanded in several regions, while religious and scholarly institutions played influential roles.

In Western Europe, the Holy Roman Empire took a firmer institutional form under Otto I, who was crowned emperor in 962. England saw continued consolidation after Viking incursions with growing royal authority and monastic reform. The Byzantine Empire, while shrinking, regained momentum under rulers such as Nikephoros II Phokas and Basil II, cultivating frontier strength against Arab and Bulgar rivals and restoring administrative efficiency.

The Ghaznavids expanded into the Indian subcontinent around 1000. In East Asia, China was reunified under the Song Dynasty in 960, beginning a period of economic growth and technological innovation.

In South Asia, regional kingdoms across the subcontinent persisted, with the Chola dynasty extending its naval influence in the south and interior polities contending for regional power. In Africa, the Ghana Empire emerged as a major trading power linked to trans-Saharan routes, while other regions engaged in Islam and urban culture.

In the Americas, complex societies and regional cultures continued to develop in Mesoamerica and the Andes, with the Toltec and Tiwanaku influences shaping later periods. The century ended amid ongoing transitions that laid foundations for medieval political orders, trade networks, and scholarly activity in diverse regions.
