Caspase-14 is a member of the cysteine-aspartic protease family, commonly known as caspases. These enzymes are critical for regulating inflammatory responses and programmed cell death, also known as apoptosis. Caspase-14 is primarily expressed in the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, and plays a distinct role compared to other caspases. Its main known function is in keratinocyte differentiation, a process where skin cells mature and form the protective barrier of the skin.
Unlike many caspases involved in apoptosis, caspase-14 appears to have a pro-survival role in epidermal homeostasis.
