Typical traits include a strong focus on performance metrics, frequent self-promotion, strategic job changes, and active networking. Careerists may cultivate alliances with influential figures, tailor their public persona, and seek roles that offer visibility and fast advancement. They may relocate or take assignments to broaden a resume and navigate organizational politics to achieve objectives.

Critics argue that careerism can erode trust, encourage opportunistic decisions, and undermine team cohesion. It can create a culture of short-termism, undermine meritocracy if promotions reward political skill over substance, and blur ethical boundaries when advancement relies on favoritism or manipulation.

Some observers view careerism as a rational response to competitive labor markets, where visibility and strategic positioning can influence career trajectories. Others distinguish between healthy career management—developing skills and seeking appropriate opportunities—and excessive careerism that treats people as means to an end.
