candytufts

Candytufts are flowering plants in the genus Iberis, in the family Brassicaceae. They produce clusters of small, four-petaled flowers, typically in white, and sometimes pink or purple, depending on the species and cultivar. Candytufts are grown as ornamental perennials or annuals in temperate gardens and are known for their long-lasting spring displays.

Two common forms are Iberis sempervirens, the evergreen candytuft, and Iberis umbellata, the globe or annual candytuft. Iberis sempervirens forms a low, evergreen mound with slender, glossy leaves and white flower clusters that appear in late spring. Iberis umbellata is an upright or spreading annual with a broader color range and more open flower heads that bloom from late spring to summer in many climates.

Culture: They prefer sunny, well-drained soils and dislike heavy, damp conditions. They tolerate drought once established and perform best in neutral to mildly alkaline soils. Propagation by seed is common for I. umbellata, while I. sempervirens can be grown from seed or from cuttings and division. They are popular for borders, rock gardens, and container plantings and attract bees and butterflies.

Care: Deadheading can extend flowering; prune after bloom to maintain compact forms. Be mindful of high humidity and poor air circulation which can encourage powdery mildew or other fungal diseases. In winter, I. sempervirens may die back in colder regions but often regrows from the base.

Origin: Candytufts are native to southern Europe and western Asia. They belong to the Brassicaceae and share the characteristic four-petaled, cross-shaped flowers common to many members of the family.
