Cablehauled describes a sailing technique in which a vessel is propelled or directed by means of cables, typically running from the ship to the shore or other fixed point. The cables are hauled in using winches, capstans or other mechanical devices, sometimes assisted by pulleys to reduce the load on the vessel’s winching system. This method allows a ship to move against the wind or to maintain a controlled course when normal sailing is impractical, for example in calm conditions, at anchor, or during docking maneuvers.
