The byggestokken, literally meaning "the building stick," is a traditional wooden measuring tool used by carpenters and builders in Norway and other Nordic regions to transfer measurements and check alignments on construction sites. The term combines bygg, meaning to build, with stokken, the definite form of stokk, meaning stick or rod.

Construction and design: typically made from hardwood such as ash or oak, though later versions used pine. Lengths commonly ranged from about 1.2 to 2 meters and the surface often carries calibrated marks at regular intervals. The byggestokken functioned as a portable straightedge and height-transfer device, used in conjunction with a plumb line or spirit level to verify verticality and horizontality across surfaces.

Use: on a worksite the stick would be placed against a wall or frame to transfer a measurement from a reference point, allowing a corresponding line to be marked on an adjacent surface. It facilitated the alignment of frames, windows, doors, and beams during rough carpentry and masonry work, helping to ensure consistent levels and straight lines over distances.

History and status: the byggestokken has roots in medieval to early modern vernacular building practices, valued for its simplicity and portability. With the rise of metal tapes, modern rulers, and laser levels, its practical use declined during the 20th century. Today it persists primarily as a historical or cultural artifact and in heritage workshops or education about traditional craft methods.
