1,3-Butadiene, often simply called butadiene, is a colorless, highly flammable gas with the chemical formula C4H6. It is a conjugated diene that serves as a major industrial monomer. In industry it is produced mainly as a byproduct of hydrocarbon processing, notably from naphtha, natural gas liquids, and refinery C4 streams, and is recovered from the C4 fraction of steam-cracked products.

The primary use of butadiene is as a polymerization monomer. It is a key feedstock for polybutadiene rubber (BR) and for styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) used in tires and other rubber goods. It also participates in copolymerizations to give acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resins and various other elastomers and plastics. Because polymerization is highly exothermic, stabilizers or inhibitors are commonly added to storage and transport to prevent premature polymerization.

Physically, butadiene is a volatile liquid at higher pressures and a gas at room temperature, with high flammability and vapour hazards. It is soluble in many organic solvents but has limited water solubility. The compound polymerizes readily under radical or anionic initiation, so handling and storage require appropriate inhibitors and stringent controls to prevent runaway reactions.

Health, safety, and regulation are central to butadiene management. 1,3-Butadiene is considered a known human carcinogen by international agencies, leading to strict occupational exposure limits and monitoring in production facilities. Releases are regulated due to environmental and public health concerns, and industry practices emphasize containment, leak detection, and proper ventilation.
