Design considerations include achieving appropriate compression to maintain seal integrity, compatibility with enclosure materials, resistance to oils and coolants, fire performance, and compliance with electrical safety standards. Seals intended for electrical enclosures typically contribute to ingress protection (IP) ratings per IEC 60529 and are specified within the broader standards for switchgear and busbar assemblies, such as IEC 61439 or equivalent regional standards.

Manufacturing methods include extrusion and molding, allowing seals to follow complex enclosure geometries. Proper installation requires correct seating and compression, avoiding deformation or overstressing the seal. Regular inspection is advised to detect cracking, hardening, or loss of elasticity, with replacement performed when seal performance is degraded to maintain enclosure integrity and safety.
