Potable bulk water must comply with applicable drinking-water standards and may undergo treatment, disinfection, and periodic quality testing before and during transport. Non-potable bulk water is not intended for drinking and may require different treatment to reduce minerals, sediment, or contaminants suitable for cooling, irrigation, or industrial processes.

Transport and storage: After treatment, water is loaded into dedicated tanks or containers and transported to customers’ sites. In municipal contexts, bulk water may support drought relief or emergency water supply.

Regulation and economics: Pricing is typically by volume (cubic meters, thousand gallons, or other units) and contracts specify delivery frequency, purity requirements, and testing. Regulations governing potable bulk water mirror those for bottled water in many jurisdictions, with additional permits for non-potable sources.
