Bulkpolymerointi, also known as bulk polymerization, is a free radical chain-growth polymerization process conducted entirely in the monomer itself without any solvent or dispersing medium. This method is one of the simplest polymerization techniques, relying solely on the monomer and initiator. The reaction begins with the thermal or photochemical decomposition of an initiator, generating free radicals. These radicals then attack monomer molecules, initiating the chain growth by forming new radicals. The propagation step involves the successive addition of monomer units to the growing polymer chain. Termination occurs when two growing chains react with each other, either through combination or disproportionation, effectively ending the polymerization.

A significant challenge in bulk polymerization is heat management. The process is highly exothermic, meaning it releases a substantial amount of heat. Without a solvent to act as a heat sink, the temperature can rise rapidly, leading to an uncontrolled increase in the polymerization rate. This phenomenon, known as the Trommsdorff effect or gel effect, causes the viscosity of the reaction mixture to increase dramatically as the polymer forms. The increased viscosity hinders chain mobility, slowing down the termination rate while propagation continues. This can result in a runaway reaction, potentially leading to dangerous pressure build-up and product degradation.

Despite the challenges, bulk polymerization offers certain advantages. It produces polymers of high purity because there are no solvents or dispersing agents to remove. The resulting polymer has a high molecular weight. However, due to the heat dissipation issues and viscosity build-up, bulk polymerization is often limited to the production of polymers with relatively low molecular weights or is used for monomers that polymerize slowly and have low heats of polymerization. Examples of polymers that can be synthesized using bulk polymerization include polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polystyrene, often for specific applications like casting or molding where control over the process can be maintained.
