Builttens are a modular numeral construct designed to express numbers by stacking or grouping tens-based blocks. The concept combines a tactile or digital kit of units with a traditional base-10 framework, emphasizing tens as the primary building blocks.

In a typical built-ten system, numbers are represented with three principal block types: ones, tens, and hundreds (with occasional extensions to thousands). Each block carries a digit from 0 to 9 and is placed in a place-value column corresponding to its weight (ones at the top or right, tens next, hundreds further down). The value of a number is obtained by summing the products of each block’s digit and its place value. For example, 347 would be represented by 3 hundred blocks, 4 ten blocks, and 7 one blocks.

Notation and layout are designed to be readable at a glance, whether in physical form (tiles or cards) or in a digital representation. The system supports straightforward mental arithmetic through the visual clustering of tens, which can simplify rounding, regrouping, and estimation tasks. Some variants include specialized “ten-merge” interactions that encourage combining ten ones into a ten, or converting ten tens into a hundred block to reinforce place-value understanding.

History and usefully, built-tens have appeared primarily in educational settings and worldbuilding contexts to illustrate tens-based counting or to power grid-based counting interfaces in simulations. They are not a standard numeral system in real-world mathematics, but serve as a pedagogical or design-oriented tool for teaching and storytelling.
