Foundations, substructures, superstructures, deck finishing, waterproofing, and barrier systems are included, with emphasis on quality control, safety, and environmental protection during erection.

Educationally, bridge builders usually hold a civil or structural engineering degree; professional licensure (such as a PE) is required in many jurisdictions. Field experience, on-site supervision, and coordination with utilities and traffic management are essential.
