A branndør, or fire door, is a door designed to resist the spread of fire and heat between compartments in a building. Its primary purpose is to maintain compartmentation, protect escape routes, and give occupants more time to evacuate while limiting damage to structure and contents. Fire doors are part of passive fire protection systems and are installed where fire resistance is required by building codes and safety regulations.

A fire door is typically a complete door set that includes the door leaf, frame, and tested hardware such as hinges, latches, and a door closer. Many branndører also incorporate intumescent seals and smoke seals that expand or compress in response to heat to maintain a barrier against fire and smoke. The performance depends on the door, frame, and hardware working together as a tested assembly. Some doors may include glass panels, which are specially rated and protected by fire-rated glazing.

Fire doors are rated for a defined period of fire resistance, commonly expressed in minutes (for example 30, 60, or 90 minutes). These ratings are established through standardized testing, such as EN 1634-1 and related classifications like EN 13501-2. Building codes and standards require that fire doors be installed and maintained as part of the building’s fire protection strategy, and only approved doorsets may be used in designated compartments.

Maintenance and operation are crucial: fire doors must remain closed or self-close when not held by approved devices, seals and hardware should be inspected regularly, and any warping, misalignment, or damage should be repaired promptly. Propping open or altering a fire door without proper authorization can compromise fire safety.

In practice, branndører come in various designs and materials (wood, metal, composites) and are selected based on the required fire resistance, level of usage, and compliance with local regulations.
