Brandlarm is the Dutch term for fire alarm systems designed to detect fires, warn occupants, and alert authorities. A typical system comprises detection devices (smoke detectors, heat detectors, flame detectors), manual call points, notification devices (sirens, loudspeakers, flashing lights), a control panel, and a power supply. Larger installations may include voice evacuation, networked panels, and integration with building management systems.

Detect devices automatically respond to smoke, heat, or flame, while manual call points allow occupants to raise an alert. Notification devices emit audible and visible warnings. The control panel monitors circuits and triggers alarms when sensors cross thresholds or a manual call point is activated.

Systems are designed in various architectures: conventional systems group devices into zones; addressable (intelligent) systems assign a unique address to each device for precise location reporting. There are also aspirating and multi-sensor detectors for challenging environments.

Standards and regulation: in Europe, EN 54 defines performance requirements for fire-detection and alarm components; in North America NFPA 72 covers fire alarm signaling. Regular maintenance is essential, including functional tests, sensitivity checks for detectors, battery replacement, and documentation. In many jurisdictions, inspections must be performed by licensed technicians at specified intervals.

Applications and considerations: brandalarms are used in residential buildings, offices, schools, hospitals, and industrial facilities to provide early warning, enable safe evacuation, and support incident response. Limitations include the risk of false alarms and the need for ongoing maintenance to preserve sensitivity.
