Brainworms is a colloquial term used to describe various parasitic organisms that can infect the brain. These infections are relatively rare but can cause serious neurological symptoms. The most common types of brainworms are the larvae of certain tapeworms and nematodes.

One notable example is neurocysticercosis, caused by the larval cysts of the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium. Humans become infected by ingesting tapeworm eggs, often through contaminated food or water. Once in the body, the larvae can migrate to the brain, forming cysts. These cysts can disrupt brain function, leading to seizures, headaches, confusion, and other neurological deficits. Diagnosis typically involves imaging techniques like MRI or CT scans, along with blood tests. Treatment strategies vary depending on the number, size, and location of the cysts, and may include antiparasitic medications and anti-seizure drugs.

Another type of brainworm infection can be caused by the larvae of certain roundworms, such as Baylisascaris procyonis, the common roundworm found in raccoons. While raccoons are the primary hosts, humans can become infected by ingesting eggs, often from contaminated soil. If the larvae migrate to the brain, they can cause a severe and often irreversible inflammatory condition known as larval migrans. Symptoms can include fever, muscle weakness, loss of coordination, and coma. Prevention largely relies on good hygiene practices, such as thorough handwashing after contact with soil or animals, and avoiding the ingestion of uncooked food that may have come into contact with contaminated soil. Public health efforts focus on parasite control in animal populations and educating the public about potential risks.
