bovenopening

Bovenopening is a Dutch term used in architecture, construction and engineering to refer to an opening situated at the upper part of a component, structure, or system. The word combines boven (above) and opening (opening). In technical usage it is often contrasted with onderopening (lower opening) and zijopening (side opening) to indicate location and orientation.

Common contexts include ventilation ducts and shafts, where the upper opening may function as the intake or exhaust point for air; chimney flues at the upper end of a heating system; openings in roofing or floors that permit access, light, or drainage from above; and service or access openings located near the top of a vertical cavity. In architectural drawings and specifications, bovenopening helps to describe how parts are connected and serviced from above.

From a construction perspective, the upper opening must be considered for weather protection, sealing against drafts and moisture, and thermal insulation. Details such as flashing, damp-proofing, screens or grilles, and appropriate closure mechanisms are often specified to maintain airtightness, prevent water ingress, and control debris or pests. In design documentation, the bovenopening is shown with dimensions, frame details, and provisions for drainage or ventilation paths.
