bolarder

Bolarder is a term used in some languages to denote bollards, which are short, vertical posts installed in streets, plazas, and dockyards. They are designed to channel or restrict traffic, protect pedestrians and infrastructure, and, in maritime settings, to secure mooring lines.

On land, bolarder installations range from simple, decorative posts to heavy-duty barrier systems. They may be fixed into concrete foundations, removable for seasonal access, or retractable to allow vehicle access when needed. Typical materials include galvanized or stainless steel, concrete, and engineered polymers. Finishes vary from natural metal to painted or powder-coated colors to blend with surroundings or to signal different uses, such as pedestrian zones, bike paths, or security corridors. Heights commonly range from about 0.6 to 1.2 meters, with diameters sufficient to resist vehicle impact.

Functions and considerations: Bolarder serve to separate pedestrians from traffic, protect storefronts, manage space in outdoor dining areas, and act as anti-ram barriers for security-sensitive sites. Where security is a concern, crash-rated bollards are installed to stop heavier vehicle impacts and are evaluated under country-specific standards. Maintenance includes checking anchors, removing corrosion, and replacing damaged units.
