Bokashibased is an informal term used to describe waste management approaches that rely on bokashi fermentation. It encompasses systems, processes, and products that inoculate organic waste with a mixed culture of beneficial microorganisms, typically delivered via bokashi bran, and ferment it in an airtight environment to pre-treat the material for disposal or further composting.

In operation, kitchen or other organic waste is layered with bokashi bran in a sealed container. The mixture ferments under anaerobic conditions, driven by lactic acid bacteria and related organisms. The result is fermented, acidic material that is less prone to odor, pests, and rapid spoilage, and that can be buried in soil or added to a compost pile to finish decomposing.

Applications include household waste diversion, community gardens, and urban farming. Benefits commonly cited are odor reduction, compact form factor suitable for small spaces, and the ability to process a wider range of kitchen waste, sometimes including small amounts of meat and dairy. The material is typically not finished compost until it is incorporated into soil or mature compost.

Limitations include the need for a dedicated airtight vessel and bokashi bran, plus management of the fermentation liquid. Finishing the decomposition usually requires burial in soil or addition to a hot compost system. Proper handling is important to avoid soil or water acidity issues when used at scale.
