Bodyswitch, sometimes called body swap, is a term used to describe scenarios in which two or more individuals exchange bodies, or their conscious selves, effectively swapping identities. The concept is a common trope in fiction and is often used to examine questions of identity, empathy, and responsibility. In many depictions, the switch is temporary and resolved through a return to the original bodies, with characters gaining new understanding of one another.

In fiction, bodyswitch plots frequently focus on how traits such as gender, age, social status, or life experiences shape behavior and perspective. Classic examples include Vice Versa (1882) by Edith Nesbit, Freaky Friday (1972 novel and later film adaptations), and more recent works like the animated film Your Name (Kimi no Na wa, 2016) and the comedy The Change-Up (2011). These stories use the device to explore relationships within families, friendships, and romantic dynamics, while highlighting themes of empathy, personal growth, and the limits of control.

Scientific and philosophical perspectives distinguish fiction from reality. There is no evidence that minds can physically transfer between bodies. However, research on body ownership shows that perceptions of one’s own body can be manipulated through illusions and virtual reality, informing discussions about self-concept and consciousness. Philosophical thought experiments on identity and continuity, such as teleportation scenarios, likewise probe what it means to remain the same person across a change of form.
