It refers to a historical technique used in the Netherlands to deepen the waterways and canals by blasting away the underlying soil and bedrock with explosives. This process dates back to the 19th century when the Dutch government sought to improve the country's water management infrastructure.

The primary goal of bodembeluchting was to widen and deepen the waterways, allowing for the easier transportation of goods and people. By blowing away the underlying soil, engineers could create wider and more consistent channels for boats and ships to navigate.
