Blysbatterier, also known as lead-acid batteries, are a type of rechargeable battery that utilizes lead plates and sulfuric acid electrolyte to store and release electrical energy. They are one of the oldest and most widely used rechargeable battery technologies, dating back to their invention by Gaston Planté in 1859.

The fundamental principle of a blysbatteri involves a reversible electrochemical reaction. During discharge, lead dioxide in the positive plate and spongy lead in the negative plate react with the sulfuric acid electrolyte, producing lead sulfate and releasing electrical energy. During charging, this process is reversed, with electrical energy applied to convert the lead sulfate back into lead dioxide and spongy lead, thus replenishing the battery's charge.

Blysbatterier are characterized by their robustness, reliability, and relatively low cost. They are commonly found in applications where high starting currents are required, such as in automobiles for engine ignition, as well as in uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), emergency lighting, and solar power storage systems. Their ability to deliver high power output makes them suitable for these demanding roles.

However, blysbatterier have certain limitations. They are relatively heavy and bulky compared to newer battery technologies like lithium-ion. Furthermore, they contain toxic lead and corrosive sulfuric acid, requiring careful handling and disposal to minimize environmental impact. Overcharging or deep discharging can also reduce their lifespan. Despite these drawbacks, the enduring advantages of cost-effectiveness and proven performance ensure that blysbatterier remain a significant technology in many sectors.
