Bloksignalen, or block signals, are a crucial component of railway safety systems. They are used to divide a railway line into sections called blocks, ensuring that only one train occupies a block at any given time. This system prevents collisions between trains by maintaining a safe distance between them.

The basic principle of a bloksignalen system is straightforward. A signal is placed at the beginning of each block. If a train has entered a block, the signal behind it will display a stop indication, preventing any subsequent train from entering the occupied block. Once the train has cleared the block, the signal will change to a proceed indication, allowing the next train to enter.

Various types of bloksignalen exist, ranging from simple semaphores that physically move to indicate stop or proceed, to modern color light signals that use different colored lights to convey more complex instructions. Interlocking mechanisms are often integrated with bloksignalen to ensure that signals and points (switches) are set in a safe configuration, preventing conflicting movements.

The implementation of bloksignalen systems has significantly reduced the risk of train accidents. They are a fundamental part of railway operations worldwide, contributing to the safe and efficient movement of trains. The technology continues to evolve with the integration of automatic train protection (ATP) systems, which can automatically apply brakes if a driver fails to respond to a signal.
