Bloats are a common condition observed in various animals, most notably in ruminants like cattle and sheep, though it can also affect other species. It refers to the excessive accumulation of gas within the digestive tract, specifically the rumen in ruminants. This gas buildup leads to distension of the abdomen, which can range from mild discomfort to a life-threatening emergency.

There are two main types of bloat: frothy bloat and free-gas bloat. Frothy bloat occurs when small gas bubbles are trapped in a stable foam within the rumen, preventing normal eructation (belching). This is often associated with the rapid consumption of lush, legume-rich pastures, such as alfalfa or clover, which can produce foaming agents. Free-gas bloat, on the other hand, happens when there is a physical obstruction to eructation, such as a blockage in the esophagus or an enlarged lymph node compressing the esophagus. In these cases, gas can accumulate freely, causing distension.

Symptoms of bloat include visible swelling of the left flank, discomfort, restlessness, difficulty breathing, and reduced appetite. In severe cases, bloats can lead to circulatory collapse and death if not treated promptly. Treatment strategies vary depending on the type and severity of the bloat and may include administering anti-foaming agents, drenching, or in critical situations, a trocarization or rumenotomy to release the accumulated gas. Prevention is key and involves careful management of diet, gradual dietary changes, and ensuring access to forage.
