Biçikleta is a two-wheeled, human-powered vehicle designed for transportation, recreation, and sport. The term is used in some languages as a variant spelling of bicycle. A typical biçikleta has a frame linking two wheels, a steering system, a saddle, and a drivetrain that transfers leg power from pedals through a crankset and chain to the rear wheel. Braking is achieved by rim or disc brakes, and tires provide traction and shock absorption. Modern editions may include gears to adjust pedaling effort on varied terrain, and some models incorporate electric motor assistance.

History and development

The bicycle lineage begins with early riding devices in the 19th century. The draisienne or laufmaschine of 1817 lacked pedals. Pedaled velocipedes appeared in the 1860s, followed by the high-wheeled Penny-Farthing in the 1870s. The modern, safer bicycle—featuring a chain drive and a diamond-shaped frame with wheels of similar size—emerged in the 1880s and established the standard design that remains in use today.

Types and variants
