Bitumikatteet are installed in overlapping layers, with the upper layer covering the seams of the lower layer to create a watertight seal. They are attached to the roof deck using nails or adhesive. Their flexibility allows them to accommodate minor structural movements, and their granule surface offers good fire resistance.

Common types of bitumikatteet include shingles, roll roofing, and modified bitumen membranes. Shingles are the most popular for residential use, while roll roofing is often used for lower-slope applications and modified bitumen membranes are suitable for flat roofs and more demanding conditions due to their enhanced durability and flexibility.
