Biotooppi, or biotope, is the term used in ecology to describe the physical and chemical environment that provides the conditions necessary for a particular community or organism to live. It refers to the abiotic, non-living part of a habitat and includes factors such as climate, soil or substrate, water regime, light, temperature, humidity, topography, and chemical characteristics. The biotooppi interacts with the living components of an ecosystem, but it emphasizes the non-living context in which life occurs.

A biotope is defined by its abiotic properties and the resources it offers, which create niches for organisms. Different biotopes can host overlapping or distinct biological communities, and microhabitats within a biotope can support additional diversity. Biotopes can be natural, such as a forest floor, a freshwater pond, or a sandy beach, or artificial, such as a managed garden pond or urban park, where human activity has established the physical conditions.

Biotopes change over time due to natural processes like climate fluctuations, disturbances, and succession, as well as through human impacts such as land use change and pollution. Restoration and conservation efforts often aim to recreate or maintain specific biotopes by restoring the abiotic conditions, enabling the targeted communities to reestablish.

Understanding biotopes helps in biodiversity assessment and land-management planning. By identifying the abiotic framework of an area, researchers can predict potential communities, monitor environmental changes, and prioritize habitats for protection or restoration.
