Biostratigraphically refers to the study and application of fossils for dating and correlating rock layers. It aids in constructing the geologic timescale, understanding the history of life on Earth, and is widely used in petroleum exploration for correlating potential reservoir rocks and understanding their burial history. While it provides relative dating, advancements in radiometric dating can often be used in conjunction with biostratigraphy to establish absolute ages for rock units.
