Biomethaneja is a term used to describe upgraded biogas that meets the quality standards required for injection into natural gas networks and for use as a renewable fuel. In practice, biomethaneja corresponds to what is commonly called biomethane or renewable natural gas (RNG); naming and definitions vary by country, but the concept centers on producing a pipeline-quality methane from organic waste streams.

Production and purification involve collecting organic feedstocks such as agricultural residues, manure, food waste, or dedicated energy crops, and processing them in anaerobic digestion to produce biogas. Upgrading removes CO2, water, hydrogen sulfide, and other contaminants to yield predominantly methane. Techniques include water washing, pressure swing adsorption, membrane separation, and solvent absorption. Some systems also employ gasification followed by methanation to convert syngas into methane. The final product is intended to be close to conventional natural gas in composition and performance.

Properties and quality control emphasize a high methane content, minimal CO2 and impurities, and odorization for safety. The gas is calibrated to align with regional natural gas standards for heating value and Wobbe index, enabling seamless injection into existing pipelines and compatibility with appliances designed for natural gas.

Applications include injection into natural gas grids for heating and power generation, and use as a transport fuel via compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG) after any additional conditioning. Biomethaneja can also be blended with fossil methane under appropriate regulatory frameworks.

Environmental and policy considerations focus on lifecycle greenhouse gas savings, which depend on feedstock choice and energy balance, as well as standards, certification schemes, and incentives that govern sustainability, traceability, and market development.
