Biome refers to a large geographical area characterized by specific climate conditions and distinct plant and animal life. High-elevation biomes are those found at high altitudes, typically on mountains or plateaus. These environments are defined by their thin atmosphere, lower temperatures, increased solar radiation, and often strong winds.

One of the most prominent high-elevation biomes is the alpine biome. It exists above the treeline, meaning trees cannot grow due to the harsh conditions. Vegetation in alpine biomes is usually low-growing, such as grasses, sedges, mosses, and lichens, adapted to withstand cold temperatures and short growing seasons. Animals in these areas, like mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and marmots, possess adaptations such as thick fur and efficient metabolism to survive the cold and scarce food resources.

Another type of high-elevation biome is the montane biome, which lies below the alpine zone. This biome can support forests, often coniferous, that are adapted to cooler temperatures and higher altitudes than forests in lower elevations. As altitude increases within the montane biome, species composition changes, and the trees may become more stunted and sparse, eventually giving way to alpine tundra.

The extreme conditions of high-elevation biomes create unique ecosystems with specialized flora and fauna. These environments are sensitive to climate change, with rising temperatures potentially causing shifts in vegetation zones and impacting the survival of adapted species. Their ecological importance lies in their role as water sources, biodiversity hotspots, and indicators of environmental health.
