Biologiapesä is a Finnish term that translates roughly to “biology nest.” In educational and research contexts it refers to a small, self-contained microcosm designed to house living organisms under controlled conditions for observation of ecological and biological processes. The concept emphasizes a compact, manageable system that allows students and researchers to study interactions such as nutrient cycling, energy flow, decomposition, photosynthesis, and simple predator–prey dynamics.

A typical biologiapesä consists of a clear enclosure (such as a jar, bottle, or small aquarium), a substrate layer, and an arrangement of living components that form a basic, observable ecosystem. Common elements include soil or leaf litter, water or humidity controls, moss or small aquatic plants, microorganisms, microfauna (such as nematodes or springtails), and sometimes small invertebrates or isolated plant species. The system is designed to be monitored over time, with simple measurements of visual change, moisture, light exposure, and, when appropriate, growth or decay.

Uses of biologiapesä span classroom demonstrations, inquiry-based projects, and introductory experiments in ecology and biology. They provide hands-on insight into concepts such as energy transfer, decomposition, plant–animal interactions, and resilience of ecosystems. Limitations include restricted diversity, simplified trophic structure, and potential issues with contamination or unintended environmental drift.
