Biodieselpolttoaine, often simply called biodiesel, is a renewable fuel derived from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled grease. It is chemically similar to petroleum-based diesel fuel but offers a more environmentally friendly alternative. Biodiesel is produced through a process called transesterification, where the fats or oils are reacted with an alcohol, typically methanol, in the presence of a catalyst. This reaction breaks down the triglycerides in the feedstock into fatty acid methyl esters, which constitute biodiesel, and glycerol as a byproduct.

One of the main advantages of biodiesel is its biodegradability and lower emissions profile compared to conventional diesel. It significantly reduces particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and unburned hydrocarbons. While it can reduce sulfur emissions, its nitrogen oxide emissions can sometimes be higher, depending on the feedstock and engine technology. Biodiesel can be used in its pure form (B100) or blended with petroleum diesel in various concentrations, such as B5 (5% biodiesel, 95% petroleum diesel) or B20. Most modern diesel engines can run on blends up to B20 without significant modifications.

The sustainability of biodiesel depends heavily on its feedstock. Biodiesel produced from used cooking oil or waste animal fats is generally considered more sustainable than that made from virgin vegetable oils, especially if the latter competes with food production or leads to deforestation. Ongoing research focuses on developing advanced biofuels from non-food sources like algae or agricultural waste to further enhance sustainability and reduce land-use impacts. Biodiesel is a key component of many governments' strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector.
