Bilspeil is a term used to describe mirrors mounted on or inside a motor vehicle that enable the driver to observe areas outside the vehicle, primarily to the rear and to the sides. The term covers both the interior rear-view mirror placed at the top of the windshield and the exterior side mirrors mounted on the doors or wings. In many markets the exterior mirrors are convex to provide a wider field of view, while the interior mirror typically offers a relatively flat view of the rear window.

Design and features: Exterior mirrors are adjustable, and many are electronically controlled with heating to prevent fogging or icing. Some models include auto-dimming to reduce glare from headlights behind the vehicle; newer cars may include memory settings, power folding for parking, and integrated turn signals or cameras.
