Bildesegment is a term used in German-language literature to denote a region of an image that is perceptually or statistically homogeneous with respect to certain features and is delineated from neighboring regions by boundaries. In English, the corresponding concept is image segment, and the broader process is image segmentation, which partitions an image into meaningful regions that can be analyzed independently.

A bildesegment is characterized by homogeneity criteria such as color, intensity, texture, depth, motion, or semantic meaning. Boundaries between segments may be defined by abrupt changes in these properties or by learned boundaries that indicate differing object or scene regions. Segmentation aims to produce a useful partitioning where each segment corresponds to a distinct object, material, or area of interest.

Techniques for obtaining bildesegmente range from classical to modern. Traditional methods include thresholding, clustering in feature spaces (such as k-means or Gaussian mixture models), region-based approaches (region growing and region merging/splitting), edge-based methods, and graph-based schemes like minimum cut or normalized cuts, as well as watershed algorithms. In recent years, deep learning has become dominant, with models for semantic segmentation that label each pixel by category and instance segmentation that separate individual objects, using architectures such as fully convolutional networks, U-Net, and Mask R-CNN.

Applications of bildesegmente span medical imaging, satellite and aerial imagery, autonomous driving, video surveillance, and document analysis. Challenges include noisy or varying illumination conditions, ambiguous boundaries, scale variation, motion, occlusions, and computational demands for high-resolution images.
