Biasilta is a term used in discussions of algorithmic fairness to describe the emergent bias that arises when multiple biases interact within a system. It captures how combined biases across data, models, and human decision-making can produce outcomes that differ from what would be expected if each bias were considered in isolation.

The coinage is recent and not yet standardized. The word—often described as a portmanteau of bias with a suffix evoking tilt or shift—appears in interdisciplinary writings spanning computer science, social science, and ethics. Its usage varies by context, and there is no single formal definition accepted across all fields.

Manifestations of biasilta occur when several biased components reinforce each other. For example, hiring tools may reflect historical data biases and, through feedback loops, reinforce skewed rankings; lending models might combine consumer data with behavioral signals to produce biased credit decisions; and predictive policing systems may amplify neighborhood biases due to interacting data and calibration issues.

Measurement and mitigation rely on broad audits of system components, sensitivity and scenario analyses, and governance measures. Approaches include data diversification, debiasing techniques that target multiple stages of the pipeline, transparent reporting, and human oversight to interrupt paths of interaction that create biasilta. Researchers emphasize the difficulty of quantifying biasilta due to its emergent, systemwide nature.

Biasilta is related to, but distinct from, single-source biases and to concepts such as bias amplification and data drift. Some scholars warn that the label can obscure specific mechanisms unless it is paired with precise measurement and component-level analysis.
