bhikshus

Bhikshu is a term originating from the Sanskrit and Pali words for "beggar" or "mendicant." It is most commonly used to refer to a fully ordained male monastic in Buddhism. Bhikshus dedicate their lives to spiritual practice, following a strict code of conduct known as the Vinaya. Their primary duty is to pursue enlightenment, not only for themselves but also to benefit all sentient beings.

The life of a bhikshu involves renunciation of worldly possessions and pleasures. They typically live in monasteries or hermitages, rely on alms for their sustenance, and spend their days in meditation, study of Buddhist scriptures, and chanting. The practice of begging for alms, or *pindapata*, is a fundamental aspect of their discipline. It is not seen as humiliation but as a means to cultivate humility, detachment, and to provide an opportunity for laypeople to earn merit by offering food and support.

The order of bhikshus has a long and continuous history dating back to the time of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. The female equivalent is a bhikshuni. While the vows and practices are similar, the Vinaya for bhikshunis contains additional rules. The monastic tradition remains a cornerstone of Buddhist practice and culture in many Asian countries.
