A betongslab is a concrete slab, a horizontal structural element made of cast concrete that distributes loads to supports such as walls, beams, or columns. It is used as a floor or roof surface in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Slabs can be cast on site (cast-in-place) or produced as precast elements and later installed.

Common types include slab-on-grade, which rests directly on the ground and is often insulated and damp-proofed; and suspended slabs, which are supported by beams or joists and may be post-tensioned or simply reinforced. Precast slabs, such as hollow-core or solid slabs, are manufactured off-site and transported to the building site.

Reinforcement is usually steel, in the form of rebar or welded wire mesh, sometimes combined with fiber reinforcement or post-tensioning strands. Concrete mix design, cover, and curing practices influence strength, durability, and crack resistance.

Key design considerations include load-bearing capacity, bending and shear performance, deflection limits, fire resistance, insulation, and durability. Proper detailing of joints, edge support, and openings is essential to manage movement, shrinkage, and potential cracking.

Finishes vary from exposed aggregate to smooth troweled surfaces and can be protected with sealers or toppings. Joints and crack-control measures, including control joints or isolation joints, help manage thermal and moisture movement.

Common applications include ground floors in houses and apartments, office floors, garages, basements, and bridges. In sustainable construction, betongslab design may integrate recycled aggregates, supplementary cementitious materials, and efficient insulation to reduce environmental impact.
