Betonglag is a term used in Swedish construction to describe a layer of concrete forming part of a structure. A betonglag can be structural or functional and may be cast in place (in situ) or produced as a prefabricated element that is later integrated into a build. The thickness, composition and reinforcement depend on the intended load-bearing capacity, exposure conditions, and local building codes.

Materials and reinforcement: A concrete layer is made from cement, aggregates, and water, often with admixtures to improve workability, set time, or durability. Structural betonglag typically incorporates steel reinforcement or fiber reinforcement to resist tensile stresses; thinner or non-structural layers may not require reinforcement.

Construction and finishing: In situ layers are placed in formwork, compacted to remove air voids, and finished by screeding and troweling. For outdoor or heavily trafficked surfaces, finishing may include brooming or texturing. After placement, curing is essential to develop strength and reduce cracking.

Durability and design considerations: The performance of a betonglag depends on mix design, curing, jointing, and protection from freeze–thaw, chlorides, and carbonation. Shrinkage cracking can occur, and joints or control measures are used to manage movement. Proper adhesion between layers is crucial when additional layers are cast onto an existing surface.

Maintenance and repair: Damaged concrete layers are repaired by removal of the affected area and replacement with fresh concrete; surface sealing and protective treatments can extend service life.
